Located in the beautiful Riverwoods area of Provo, Utah, Cognitive FX offers world class treatment for people suffering from cognitive problems caused by injury, accident, or disease. CFX is the place to go when no other place has been able to provide the answers or solutions to your cognitive problems. In fact, CFX services have attracted professional athletes like Tom Brady and Austin Collie, who have enlisted fNCI and CFX services into their standard cognitive care regimen.
CFX has the proper plan and personnel to get you back in control of your life.
CFX staff include world class therapists, PhDs, and MDs, who have vast experience and have worked with every type of patient. CFX clients include people from all walks of life, from everyday people suffering head injuries from sports or auto accidents to professional athletes who are interested in returning to play as fast and safely as possible. CFX has the proper plan and personnel to get you back in control of your life.
Long before Cognitive FX was created, Dr. Mark Allen, PhD, and Dr. Alina Fong, PhD began searching for a greater understanding of the brain, its functions, and how each region of the brain contribute to overall functionality. As we began searching for answers, we began to understand how the brain functions, and its abilities in significant ways. Over time, we had established a strong foundation of what a normal brain should function like, creating an objective scale where we can measure where individuals should be for optimal brain functioning.
We spent years researching and applying the technology of fMRI and adapting it to understand brain functioning with the technology we now know as Notus Functional NeuroCognitive Imaging (fNCI). We started applying this technology in the clinical setting as interest grew in our community. This technology is now used in military hospitals, clinics, private hospitals, urgent care facilities and more. Clinicians see that this technology is useful as a diagnostic tool to understand what is happening with their patients in ways they could not understand before, because fNCI inspects 57 distinct regions of the brain. For example, physicians can now describe a complex brain injury with actual understanding of underlying neuronal function instead of using a one word summary “concussion”.
After several years, interest in the legal community began to grow, as this technology is used as a forensic tool that not only justifies the severity of injuries, but can help clarify causation in some cases and to more fully understand the level of damage from the injury. This technology also helps to justify the cost of treatment and care for the injuries to be resolved.
Once this technology was applied in these new ways, we began to explore treatment options with a group of multidisciplinary doctors. Initially we were hoping we could find a treatment protocol that would be be would be effective within 3-6 months, and perhaps resolve persistent issues that have previously been known to never resolve. We thought that if we could find something that would have results in that short amount of time, it would be revolutionary, and empowering for individuals that have been dealing with symptoms and pain for so long.
In June of 2011, initial tests were done with Utah Valley Regional Medical Center in Provo, UT. We tried a variety of treatment protocols, and we saw some interesting results. Moving forward over the next few years with many trial patients we realized that the ability to change the function in the brain was something we could change much more quickly than 3 months.
We learned that fNCI technology gave us the ability to understand specific functional problems, to then target specific treatments to balance brain function. Because of neuroplasticity and our treatment protocol we have the ability to create, and to re-establish the best pathways for brain functioning in about a week. At first we didn’t believe it ourselves, and through more testing and research we have seen that the results of EPIC treatment are extremely effective and as of recent longitudinal studies show the results are lasting and impactful for individuals long term.
At this point, we realized that the results spoke for themselves, and that we needed to offer and share this treatment with others. Cognitive FX was opened in fall of 2014 with the goal to help as many individuals recover from concussions (mTBI) as possible in the most effective amount of time possible. As of June 2016, longitudinal studies show results well within the normal range of brain function still in effect around 8.5 months after EPIC treatment. We will continue to look at lasting results, but we are confident that EPIC treatment is lasting and impactful in meaningful quantifiable ways.
