TMS Therapy in Utah
Precision brain stimulation for depression and anxiety. Get results in 5 days instead of 6 weeks with our advanced fMRI-guided accelerated TMS protocol.
Why Choose Cognitive FX for TMS in Utah?
Most Utah TMS clinics use outdated targeting methods and require 4-6 weeks of treatment. We take a fundamentally different approach.
Standard TMS Clinics
- Use the "5cm rule" to estimate treatment location
- 4-6 weeks of daily appointments (20-36 sessions)
- No brain imaging for guidance
- ~50% response rate, ~30% remission
- Manual coil positioning each session
- One-size-fits-all approach
Our fMRI-Guided Approach
- fMRI scan identifies YOUR exact treatment target
- 5-day accelerated protocol (50 sessions in one week)
- Functional brain imaging for precision
- ~86% response rate, ~79% remission
- Neuronavigation ensures perfect coil placement
- Individualized to your brain anatomy

Your TMS Treatment Journey
From initial consultation to completing treatment, here's what to expect at Cognitive FX.
Free Consultation
15-30 minutes | Virtual or Phone
We'll review your history, discuss your symptoms, and determine if our fMRI-guided TMS protocol is right for you. No pressure, just honest answers.
fMRI Brain Scan
Day before treatment | ~45 minutes
We take detailed functional images of your brain to identify the precise location of your dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC). This ensures we target exactly the right spot for your unique brain anatomy.
5-Day Intensive Treatment
Monday through Friday | 10 sessions/day
You'll receive 10 short TMS sessions each day (about 10 minutes each) with 50-minute breaks between sessions. Our neuronavigation system ensures the magnetic coil is positioned perfectly for every session.
CBT Integration
During treatment week
We include cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) as part of your treatment. Research shows combining TMS with CBT improves remission rates by approximately 19%.
Follow-Up Support
Post-treatment
You'll go home with resources to continue CBT practices and access to follow-up support. Most patients maintain their improvement long-term.

Looking for Insurance-Covered TMS?
Our sister clinic, Neural Effects, offers standard rTMS treatment that is covered by most major insurance plans. While standard rTMS requires 4-6 weeks of daily sessions and has different response rates than our accelerated fMRI-guided protocol, it may be a good option if insurance coverage is a priority for you.
During your consultation, we can help you determine which treatment approach is the best fit for your situation and goals.
Learn About Neural EffectsFrequently Asked Questions About TMS in Utah
Cognitive FX is the only clinic in Utah offering fMRI-guided TMS therapy. While most clinics use the outdated "5cm rule" to estimate treatment location, we use functional MRI scans to precisely identify the exact brain region that needs stimulation for each individual patient. This precision targeting, combined with our accelerated 5-day protocol, produces significantly higher response rates than standard TMS.
Our accelerated TMS protocol takes just 5 days, compared to 4-6 weeks at most other clinics. You'll receive 10 short treatment sessions per day (about 10 minutes each) with 50-minute breaks between sessions. Most patients complete treatment Monday through Friday and return home the same week.
Research on the accelerated fMRI-guided TMS protocol shows approximately 86% of patients respond to treatment, with about 79% achieving remission. This compares to roughly 50% response rates for standard repetitive TMS (rTMS) protocols used at most clinics.
Most insurance plans cover standard rTMS but not yet accelerated fMRI-guided TMS protocols. If insurance coverage is a priority, our sister clinic Neural Effects offers standard rTMS that is covered by most major insurance plans. During your consultation, we can help you understand your options and determine which approach is best for your situation. For our accelerated protocol, treatment is HSA/FSA eligible and we offer CareCredit financing.
TMS is generally not painful. Most patients describe feeling a tapping sensation on the scalp during treatment. The most common side effects are mild headache and scalp discomfort, which typically resolve after the first few sessions. Unlike medications, TMS does not cause weight gain, sexual dysfunction, or cognitive impairment.
We do not treat patients under 18 or over 65, those with a history of seizures, or those with certain metal implants in the head (dental work is fine). Patients who are actively suicidal and need crisis care should seek immediate help. During your consultation, we'll review your complete history to determine if TMS is safe and appropriate for you.
Research shows that 60% of patients who achieve remission with accelerated fMRI-guided TMS remain in remission at one month. Long-term data on this specific protocol is still emerging, but we include CBT as part of treatment because research shows it helps sustain results. Some patients may benefit from maintenance sessions later.
Many patients travel from across the country for our accelerated protocol specifically because it condenses treatment into just one week. We provide hotel recommendations and can help with travel logistics. For patients from Salt Lake City, Park City, or elsewhere in Utah, the drive is manageable for a 5-day treatment course.
